Mayapple magazine was inspired by the 2020 international Tezuka manga competition.
The flurry of activity and the excitement it generated was so inspiring. Reading the entries every day, then discussing them with other creators was so much fun! All the while supporting each other as we worked on our own entries.
Once the deadline passed, this excitement died down and everything went quiet. I really missed it and thought, maybe I could create a space to try and reignite that feeling! Which , in turn, led to the creation of Mayapple magazine.

Matsuri Festival

Since 1971 Shonen Jump has used the Tezuka award to find new manga talent and honor the hard work of aspiring manga artists. With this in mind, for our first anniversary, I thought it would be fun to hold our own such award; an annual event to nurture, exhibit and promote international manga!
Hopefully through this Matsuri, or festival, we can recapture some of the camaraderie and fun of the 2020 100th anniversary Tezuka award! Every qualifying entry will be posted on the website (until the next round) so they can be read, discussed and shared. A select few will go into the October issue of Mayapple to celebrate one year in publication!

Lite novels?

Initially we set out with the goal of being a manga-centric magazine like Shonen jump, Saturday Am etc. However, over the past year we have met so many passionate writers that the concept was expanded to include articles and reviews! As such, we’d like to include them in this event, so a section for light novel-esq prose will be included! We would love for artwork to be included with the text , but it isn't required.
I have pulled together a rag-tag crew of judges from behind the scenes at Mayapple including myself (Zen), Jesse , Snowy , Lotti  and Fend! We would also like to welcome guest judge, Marvel artist Alex Ogle. As a thankyou/punishment for helping concoct this idea at C2E2 in 2021.
A selection of prizes has been pulled together , including being featured in the October issue and joining our mangaka in a physical anthology of the Matsuri content! The book will go through our distributor and be available worldwide anywhere books are sold! You can see your work in print!!
In the end we want you all to have fun, make more manga , talk about making manga, read each other's work , get help, give help etc.  Whether you are a seasoned pro, hobbyist or aspiring creator, we would love you, and your manga friends to join us!
Let’s celebrate the international love of manga, by making manga!
Join the discord to discuss and get feedback while you work on your entry.

Be sure to read the rules and guidelines to make sure you’re entry qualifies!
